Loyola's History

Our parish sits at a confluence of several historical currents of interest and significance to parishioners, academic researchers, genealogy experts, and others. 

Our history includes the stories of:

• The rich culture of a historically Black Catholic community.
• A space of worship and a faith community active in the Whittier and Five Points neighborhoods for nearly a century.
• A church building completed in 1924, approaching its centenary anniversary.
• An archive in red brick, stained glass, and masonry that preserves 20th and 21st-century American religious architectural design, aesethetic, and restoration methods.
• The only Jesuit parish in Colorado.
• Black Catholicism and Jesuit pastoral care in the U.S. Mountain West. 
• A community of people, in perpetual celebration of diversity and social justice work, but most importantly of holding each other up in prayer, and witnessing to each other's struggles and joys from one generation to the next.
