"Being a catechist is a vocation...and is a true and genuine ministry in the Church"
-- Pope Francis (2018)
In 2021, Pope Francis recognized the ancient and vital role of catechists by inaugurating the lay Ministry of Catechists. In his apostolic letter Antiquum ministerium, he described catechists as individuals of "deep faith [and] authentic witnesses of holiness."
We certainly regard them as that and much more at Loyola. As in the early church community, our catechists are charged with deep responsibilities, and through their service they hold a unique place of honor among the parish laity. They form strong and committed Catholics by working with young people from pre-K through Middle School. Catechists lead Children's Church and Religious Education classes and prepare young catechumens and candidates for First Reconciliation, Confirmation, and First Communion.
Do you feel called to volunteer as a catechist? If so, please consider contacting the Director of Faith Formation about opportunities to work with kids and teens in Religious Education or with adults in RCIA. As an RE classroom leader or co-leader, you will form part of each child’s dynamic faith-formation team, alongside their parents and parish staff members. Whether working with youths or adults, you will help form and foster the Catholic faith for catechumen and candidates, and engender within them a love for inclusion, community, and social justice.
Catechists must be confirmed and practicing Catholics over the age of eighteen. All returning and new catechists will attend a retreat in late August. Youth classroom leaders will also attend a mandatory Safe Environment training provided by the archdiocese. Opportunities for deeper catechetical training will be available throughout the year. For more information, please contact the Director of Faith Formation.
